Generally, whatever information you emphasize on the left side of the page determines the style of resume you are using.  For example:

I. Chronological:  left side of the page focuses on dates in reverse chronological order.  Beside the dates are the positions you've held that demonstrate progressive levels of responsibility and your achievements in each position. 

FACTORS + FACTORS -
staying in the field work history is spotty
last employer important changing career goals
history shows growth too many employers
job titles impressive wish to de-emphasize age
traditional fields doing same thing too long
  absent from market too long
  looking for your first job

II. Functional:  left side of the page focuses on the positions you've held (dates are de-emphasized). 

FACTORS + FACTORS -
emphasize capabilities not used in recent work emphasize management growth pattern
changing careers for teachers, poliiticians, ministers
entering job market limited functions in your work
re-entering the job market most recent employers were highly prestigious
career growth weak  
had different jobs  
had freelance, temp, or consulting background  

III. Combination: left side of the page lists two or three skills, examples of how you've used them in the past, and what you achieved as a result. 

FACTORS + FACTORS -
very clear job target one resume for several applications
have several directions to go; different resume for each not clear about capabilities and accomplishments
want to emphasize capabilities but no experience just starting career and have little experience

Other names of styles:

IV. Targeted: Job objective is clearly noted at the top of the document, and matches the name of the occupation used within the company that you're targeting.  Content throughout the document points back to the objective and summary of qualifications. 

FACTORS + FACTORS -
little or no paid work enough experience to warrant I or II
out of the job market not sure what to do
research an employer not sure about contribution
know who's hiring  

V. Creative: You are very creative and none of the above styles suit your present circumstances.

FACTORS + FACTORS -
written, visual creativity are prerequisites planning to go through personnel
can display work in printed form not sure of creative ability
  looking for management position
